A Look at a New High School Scholarship Fund

Hank Raymonds Family Scholarship

Client/Background
In 2011, the Hank Raymond Family Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to students wanting to attend Pius XI High School, but lacking the means. The scholarship is application-based, and is awarded based on academics, character and community service. Legendary Marquette University basketball coach Hank Raymonds was extremely involved with Pius XI basketball, and the school always held a special place in his heart. To honor his memory, the high school renamed its court “Hank Raymonds Court” at a dedication ceremony in the Pius XI Field House prior to a girls’ home basketball game. The court now features a specially designed logo bearing his name.

Project
The project had multiple goals:

  • Dedicating the basketball court in Coach Raymonds’ name
  • Announcing the establishment of the Hank Raymonds Family Scholarship
  • Showcasing a commemorative plaque in the Pius XI Field House atrium
  • Generating initial donations to the scholarship fund

Strategies

The Roberts Group planned a dedication ceremony that featured special presentations from the Pius XI principal and Maurice “Bo” Ellis, former NBA star and player for Raymonds, as well as a court blessing. A special Hank Raymonds tribute video was the catalyst of the event.

The program was marketed by creating:

  • A letter to Pius XI students and parents, and students of the competing basketball team
  • An email to Pius XI faculty
  • An invitation to a provided guest list
  • Press releases to local media

Results

  • Increased attendance to the Pius XI girls basketball game by 50 percent
  • Raised $10,000 for the Hank Raymonds Family Scholarship
  • Generated press coverage in local media, including print stories, on-site interviews and coverage
