WAUKESHA, Wis. – Jennifer Roberts, an account manager at The Roberts Group, has completed her Master of Science in health communication program at Boston University. The program is the first of its kind in this discipline to be offered in a distance-learning format. The Roberts Group is a health care marketing agency specializing in marketing strategy for health care providers and the degree program blended her professional work with academics, a pairing that will continue beyond graduation.
The program started accepting students in 2008, responding to a rapidly emerging need for health communication professionals, a demand that is projected to continue its fast-paced growth for many years. The curriculum covers communication subjects, including marketing, social media and public relations, along with health care topics such as epidemiology, biology of disease, nutrition and medical ethics.
“The accomplishment of finishing this degree is huge, but being a part of the inaugural class makes it all the more special,” said Roberts. “Health care is a rapidly growing field, as we all have seen. The curriculum brought real issues to the classroom and provided a profound understanding of our health care system and the challenges we all face. I have already applied my classroom learning to my daily work in health care marketing.”
For Roberts, the online format provided a reputable program with the flexibility of working full-time.
“Nearly all students were working full time. It was still very fast-paced, but being able to complete your work according to your own schedule opened the door to this program for many working professionals,” added Roberts.
